About the story

An ongoing, multipart look at how families in various regions of the United States are already being forced to acclimate, adapt and, in some cases, accept an entirely altered fate. “Gone in a Generation” began with four parts examining wildfires in California, flooding in North Carolina, sea-life migration in the Northeast and dying forests in the Rocky Mountains. Its aim was to show not only how lives and economies were at stake, but also how intrinsically connected families are with their environment.

Role description

This story featured strong visuals that paired well with text and graphics. The challenge as the designer was to craft a narrative experience that wove text, video, and graphics into a seamless presentation that gave each component editorial weight. The page houses the series as a whole, while also letting each story live on its own.

The digital presentation features dynamic URLs. Based on the URL you come to the story through, the order will change. For example, if you click on the wildfires story, that will be the first one on the page, whereas the default order puts forests at the top.

In addition, the story received a bonus section in the print paper.
