Individual contributions: Project’s digital designer and developer challenged with connecting three long-form stories. The storytelling experience for this project called for a custom build that allowed readers to easily flow from one story into the next using a lazy-load feature. It also featured multiple navigational elements that served as a timeline for the story. Other storytelling elements such as a flexible visual grid that could feature photos and video and social media embeds elevated the reader’s understanding of the story. In terms of presentation, I leaned heavily on visual cues such as background color and red accents to let the reader know when they were entering a new time/place/subject matter and emphasize the mystery of what was going on.

Project summary: A three-part investigative series by The Washington Post reveals through new reporting how law enforcement officials failed to heed mounting red flags of violence on Jan. 6, documents the bloody consequences of President Donald Trump’s inaction during the siege and shows how a deep distrust of the voting process has taken root across the country.
