Portfolio Cost of a Canine

Animal Shelters take in 3.9 million dogs a year, and a main reason why is because families can no longer financially support their pet.

Riley is a newly adopted puppy and lives with Grace - an undergraduate student at UNC Chapel Hill - in an off-campus house. Grace is a biology major and plans do to scientific research after graduating. She goes to all her classes, studies and does research at the biology lab. With Riley already neglected at home for hours at a time, she is also struggling to pay for the utilites at her new home. Within four months, she has to start cutting back on luxeries. Eventually she comes to the hard decision of bringing Riley back to the shelter. In her mind, she is doing the right thing since she didn't have the time for a dog anyway, but she doesn't realize that the shelter will euthanize Riley after 60 days due to limited space.

Last year, animal shelters across the United States took in 7.6 million animals.

About 51% (3.9 million) were dogs. In additon, 2.7 out of 7.6 million animals were euthanized last year.
